Promoting This Old Barn

Social media ‘n some really great kids…

The truth is, after all this time, after all these meals, weddings, concerts, cocktail parties, baby and bridal showers, retirement parties.  After all these late nights, early mornings, trips to Schoharie and to Northville and every town in between.  After a whole bunch of meetings, emails, articles and consultations… I still have no idea of how marketing and promotion actually work.  Or if they work.  I’m fascinated how some posts, emails or announcements take flight and catalyze interest and action.  Others just lay on the tarmac.

It’s on my mind this morning as we’re in that time of year when we catch up on some important behind the scenes organizational work that gets ignored during the madness of December.  Wedding logistics, concert announcements, seasonal menus, special events. Calendar maintenance.

I’m left wondering which will be recognized, attended and appreciated and which ones (hopefully none!) just won’t catch the attention or fancy of our followers. Do we post enough? Are we posting too much and becoming an annoyance?

Like I said, I have no idea what I’m doing.

Don Staber ran this place very well for exactly 20 years and never advertised or promoted at all. He was just a believer of word of mouth.  My daughter Meegan pointed out to me, when she was about 11, that the social media outlets are today’s word of mouth and we’d better get in the conversation.  Balance. I guess.

We’ve announced a whole slew of concerts for the winter/early spring season.  More to follow.  They can be found on the Events tab on Facebook and on our website. I hope you’ll give it a look, consider attending a show or two and possibly act as a ‘connector’ by telling a friend.  My promise is that the artists that grace this barn are each outstanding examples of their particular genre.

Random thought… after cleaning up this place after the busy Christmas season. After the New Year’s celebration.  Before hosting a wedding reception on Saturday night, we took a little break…we had a staff gathering/dinner here last Wednesday. I’m incredibly fortunate to get to work with this group of people every day. We broke bread, we played cornhole in the dining room.  We enjoyed each other’s company.  For all the bellyaching I have done (every other ‘grownup’ too) about the absence of work ethic in today’s youth, I gotta tell you.. we have some really great kids here in Galway, Glenville and Broadalbin!  Terrific big kids too!
